Is your Nexus 7 (2012) slow after Lollipop?

Hi, I’m Doug — a tech enthusiast, home lab builder, and AI explorer. I share practical projects, lessons learned, and ways to make technology work smarter, not harder.

I know that everyone is excited about Google sending out the Lollipop update for the Nexus 7 (2012) tablet but after I did the update, my device was extremely slow and almost unusable.  I was going to suggest that you hold off until Google works the bugs out but there is something that might help if you already did the update. Updated below on 12/11/14.

Clear the cache

One thing that did help is clearing the cache. I found the post below on 9to5Google.com that explains how to do it:
2012 edition Nexus 7 running slow after installing Lollipop? This might help
After clearing the cache, the device is faster but you have to open each application so that the cache can be recreated.  After opening the apps once, they do load much faster so this might solve many of the slowdown issues.

Some other issues

I am also having  some problems with Facebook and Words with Friends locking up every now and again but those apps have never been very stable on this device for some reason. The Kindle reader is somewhat slow to load but I can’t say for sure if it is any slower than before the update.
I am able to play videos on YouTube and they are smooth overall. Twitter, Google+ and Evernote seem to be working well overall also.
Another strange happening is that the screen will go black once in a while but then it comes back to normal. I happened in a few different applications and a few times on the home screen.
One last thing, if your screen looks too dark, go into settings, choose display and turn off Adaptive Brightness. I kept adjusting the brightness but the screen would keep getting darker until I turned it off.

Should I stay or should I go? (update – stay)

Should you update? I cannot answer that question for you but so far, I am fairly satisfied with the update after clearing the cache.
Update: For some reason, after my Nexus 7 sat overnight, it is back to being almost unusable again. Slow is an understatement, the screen goes blank at times and even Google Chrome is crashing.
With that said, if you haven’t updated to Lollipop yet, I suggest that you don’t do it and stay on KitKat until Google gets this fixed.

Update 12/11/14

Since my Nexus was unusable again, I ended up rooting the device and installing CyanogenMod, based on Android 4.4.4 and it is running well again. I heard that Google is sending out some 5.01 updates but I am not sure if it is for the 2012 Nexus and even if it is, I am happy now that I am using CyanogenMod.
